Mohawk Announces 15 Million Dollar Capital Investment Program

FOR RELEASE: March 1, 2000

COHOES, NY - Mohawk Paper Mills Inc. is investing over $15 million in capital improvements to increase productivity and respond to growing demand for the company's high-quality product lines.

The $15 million plus, budgeted through 2000, is funding improvements at Mohawk's Cohoes and Waterford plants. It comes on the heels of a $90 million capital investment that, in the early 1990s, propelled Mohawk to the forefront of digital paper manufacturing - a position the company has maintained ever since.

"Today we manufacture 25% more paper each week than we did just five years ago. And it's great paper," explains Thomas O'Connor Jr., Mohawk Executive Vice President. "That's a tremendous increase in capacity, and one that indicates that we're a strong, viable source for premium papers for the long term.

All of the slated improvements will either further enhance paper quality or hasten processing, in part by reducing down time between product changes and web breaks.

In the flagship Cohoes mill, for example, a Jagenberg Conwind II winder will increase productivity by 20 percent. An NDC gamma gauge will improve formation, enhance grade change capability, and allow greater consistency control. A new Compact Pick-Up will improve machine speed and runnability - designed to self deckle 52" rolls for cut-size cutter, the result will be a 10 percent productivity improvement.

In the nearby Waterford mill, upgrades to the Fourdrinier and its drainage elements will improve formation, increase running speed, and reduce chemical usage and cost. A calendar stack replacement will increase deckle, improve control of caliper and finish, and enhance the capability to produce smooth grades.

"Our commitment is to assure our customers of consistently superior quality across all printing platforms," O'Connor says. "This program of capital investment represents the latest example of our determination to deliver on that commitment."

Mohawk Paper Mills Inc. is a leader in the manufacture of premium printing papers. From its flagship grade, Mohawk Superfine, through proprietary new Inxwell products, Navajo and Options, Mohawk has engineered its papers to provide optimal performance for sheetfed, web and digital printing.
