Education Is the Highlight of Mohawk Annual Specification Retreat

FOR RELEASE: July 16, 2000

COHOES, NY - Regardless of the printing platform, the finished piece is only as good as the paper itês printed on. Increasingly, the paper company of choice is Mohawk, whose product line is engineered specifically to provide consistent quality for all the ways you print.

Those were among the messages delivered recently at Mohawk Paper Mills' national conference for a number of the company's select merchant specification representatives. The three-day retreat, held at the Sagamore at Lake George, New York discussed the myriad of choices in today's printing market and Mohawk's efforts to simplify decision making by emphasizing core whites that perform equally well on both traditional offset presses and the latest digital equipment.

"With more than 1,100 different colors available in the market, the choices are overwhelming - and unnecessarily so. Since whites and off-whites account for 85 percent of text and cover sales, there's simply no reason to inundate the market with colors," explained Craig Slemp, vice president of marketing for Mohawk.

"At Mohawk, we've taken a simpler, more sensible approach," he added. "We've streamlined our product lines and SKUs to focus on a core group of quality whites, for improved profitability for both ourselves and our customers."

The national conference marked the latest in a series of educational efforts sponsored by Mohawk to help paper and print professionals stay abreast of changing printing technology. It began with a firsthand look at Mohawk's operations via tours of the company's mills in Cohoes and Waterford, New York.

Conference sessions detailed today's digital and offset printing options and their applications in the marketplace. They also provided tips on how to sell paper and how to ensure the best results, regardless of printing platform.

"Mohawk has always believed in the value of continuing education, for ourselves and for our customers," said Beth Povie, Mohawk advertising manager. "We are committed to keeping pace with the changing printing environment - and to providing the information that enables our customers to remain current, too. Our annual summer conference is just one way that we deliver on that commitment."
