FOR RELEASE: January 23, 2004
COHOES, NY Consistent with its environmental stewardship and sound energy policy, Mohawk Paper Mills, Inc. has become a Partner in the innovative and collaborative Green Power Partnership.
The Green Power Partnership was created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist and promote organizations that commit to using green power for a portion of their electricity needs. Mohawk is the first paper mill in the U.S. to be part of the Partnership.
Mohawk is also the first paper mill in North America to use wind energy. Leading the paper industry, Mohawk announced late last year its purchase of non-polluting wind power. New wind turbines are the fastest growing and most cost-effective renewable energy technology. Wind energy produces electricity with zero fuel and zero pollution. “Green power” is electricity generated by renewable energy sources including solar, wind, water (hydro), geothermal, biomass (combustion of organic materials) and biogas (combustion of naturally-produced methane).
The Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program working to standardize green power procurement as part of best practice environmental management and sustainability. Partners in the Green Power Partnership include Fortune 500 companies, states, federal agencies, trade associations and universities. Among the federal agencies participating in the program are the DOE, NASA, GSA, USDA, EPA and the U.S. Army.
“Mohawk is the first North American paper mill to invest in non-polluting wind energy, providing a great example of environmental leadership,“ said Kurt Johnson of EPA’s Green Power Partnership.
Mohawk has long advocated a holistic approach to environmental management, which includes a commitment to energy conservation. "By creating a network of like-minded organizations, we see the EPA Green Power Partnership as an important resource.
Its website, www.epa.gov/greenpower/index.htm, provides a highly credible source of information for those seeking to do business with companies committed to the use of renewable energy,” says George Milner, Mohawk’s Senior Vice President, Energy and Environmental Affairs. “Our participation in this Partnership is evidence of the direct and positive impact we are making in providing forward-looking products to our customers while minimizing impact on the environment,” says Mohawk’s President and C.E.O., Tom O’Connor, Jr.
