Mohawk Launches New Web-Based, Interactive Environmental Calculator

COHOES, NY – More and more paper merchants have shifted their attention to corporate buyers. Those who have made inroads in this segment know that major corporations are looking for new ways to communicate their environmental commitment to customers. Increasingly, those customers are looking to Mohawk for FSC certified recycled papers made with wind power. Now paper merchants, large and small, can show their corporate customers the tangible results of their buying decisions with Mohawk’s new, web-based Interactive Environmental Calculator.

Corporate customers know they should use environmentally friendly products, and they know why…conceptually, that is. They understand that using recycled paper is not only good for the environment but it also resonates with customers and the investment community. But how can merchants help their corporate clients really understand the extent to which they are helping when they specify recycled paper? What if there was a tool that helped a merchant sales rep quantify the environmental savings on every project his corporate clients specified on recycled paper? Mohawk’s new Interactive Environmental Savings Calculator does just that. This device is already helping printers and paper specifiers see and believe the impact they can have by choosing to produce their work on recycled paper. Now merchant sales reps can use this tool with corporate customers who are interested in environmentally sound products.

For instance, if a corporate customer produced just 10 average sized brochures per month on a Mohawk 100% PCW paper like Mohawk Options, that customer would eliminate over 12,000 lbs. of atmospheric emissions in just one year!

This tool is already being embraced all over the country. Michael Joyce, Director of HDR, one of the country’s leading architectural firms and a long-time leader in the green building industry, has taken a proactive role in evaluating and communicating the environmental results that can be achieved through printing. Recently, HDR was asked by Omaha’s Mayor and Chamber of Commerce to develop a program called “Destination Midtown” — a study to examine Omaha’s historic midtown area and to develop implementation measures to assist in returning this area to prominence. She filled in a brief form with some basic paper specification information and immediately got her results. By printing the Destination Midtown book on Mohawk Options, produced with Mohawk’s proprietary, patented Inxwell^® process, HDR was able to report tangible savings to the client.

Additionally, because the paper specified for this project was from Mohawk’s wind power portfolio (which is emission-free), there were other environmental impacts including: 168 lbs. of air emissions (CO₂ SO₂ NOX) were not generated, which is equivalent to the planting of 11.33 trees.

Michael Joyce used to enjoy telling his peers that HDR uses100% PCW and ECF (elemental chlorine free) papers. Now, he says things like: “We save almost 150 trees per month with Mohawk papers,” and “Last year, we saved more than 36 tons of solid waste from going to a landfill.”
