[Cohoes, NY] – The environmental message behind Dale Djerassi and Bo Boudart’s film Oil on Ice is loud and clear – the environment is important, and both our business and consumer choices can honor and protect it. Oil on Ice, a documentary about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and the controversy over drilling for oil there, is now available on DVD – and in eco-friendly packaging. The Oil on Ice DVD package, designed by Insync Media, is produced using Mohawk Options 100% PC White cover paper. Mohawk Paper Mills was selected to provide the paper for the Oil on Ice DVD package because it offered paper made with process-chlorine-free 100 percent post-consumer waste fiber and is manufactured using non-polluting, wind-generated energy from Fenner Wind Farm in upstate New York. A leader in environmental stewardship, Mohawk is the only mill in the U.S. to use non-polluting, wind energy to make paper. The paper is certified by Green Seal and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) under a program recognizing products made with high percentages of post-consumer reclaimed materials. Oil on Ice, a presentation of Sierra Club Productions, explores the issues of American consumption and links the choices we make today about America’s wild places to our energy future. “It is important to practice what we preach in the film,” said Djerassi. “We are proud to offer not only a film that informs the public about the energy debate and the importance of preserving our country’s treasured wild places, but also a packaging solution that is environmentally conscientious and responsible.” Djerassi and Boudart used Mohawk’s environmental calculator to determine the environmental benefits of packaging the Oil on Ice DVD in eco-friendly paper. The initial order of 5,700 pounds of paper resulted in substantial environmental savings. For example, 68 trees were not cut down by choosing Mohawk Options 100% PC White paper and nearly 30,000 gallons of water/wastewater were saved. “Mohawk is increasingly working with companies and organizations seeking to move beyond compliance and extend their environmental commitment into the marketing sphere,” said Laura Shore, VP, Marketing Communications, Mohawk Paper Mills. “We are looking for partners who share our values and can provide products that connect those values to the marketplace. The Oil on Ice filmmakers share these values and we are proud to offer them an environmentally friendly solution for their packaging.” Oil on Ice provides an in-depth look at the issues of global climate change, vehicle fuel efficiency standards, wildlife protection and renewable energy sources. “What people may not realize is that the fate of the Refuge is inextricably linked to decisions our nation makes about energy policy, transportation and other seemingly unrelated matters,” said Djerassi. “It would be selling the American people short to assume we don’t care about these things. The American people want to make the right decisions for our future.” Oil on Ice (www.oilonice.org) is a multi-faceted media project about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and the conflict over drilling for oil there. The award-winning one-hour documentary film, WebDVD and Website examine the battle over one of America’s last great wild places, which is currently at the center of a national energy debate. Oil on Ice shows how the fate of the Refuge is inextricably linked to decisions our nation makes about energy policy, transportation choices, and other seemingly unrelated matters, while the culture and livelihood of the native Gwich’in Indians and the survival of migratory wildlife are caught in the balance.
