Wind Mills Power The Beckett Mill |

[Cohoes, NY] — Today, Mohawk Paper Mills, Inc. begins using pollution-free, wind generated electricity to run the Beckett Paper Mill in Hamilton, Ohio. Approximately one half of the electric consumed in the production of paper at the mill will come from wind power. Although wind power costs more than traditionally generated electricity, Mohawk views its use as a way to demonstrate its commitment to environmental excellence in the communities in which it operates. Today, Mohawk is a national leader in the use of wind power for manufacturing, second only to Johnson & Johnson. Mohawk's initial purchase of wind power was in 2004 for its Cohoes, New York mill and was equal to one turbine's worth of electricity. This purchase made Mohawk the only paper company in the U.S. to use wind energy to manufacture paper. Mohawk increased that amount in 2005 to the output of 2.5 turbines. In May 2005, Mohawk began negotiating a contract to provide wind power generated electricity for the newly acquired Beckett Mill. Today, Mohawk is taking an additional 35 million kWh of power for the Beckett Mill, and a total of 45 million kWh annually. This commitment enables Mohawk to join the highest level EPA Green Power Partnership Leadership Club. Today, many corporate customers seek ways to mitigate impacts on the environment and are looking for a means to highlight their contributions to socially responsible organizations. Mohawk responded with the development of its Wind Power Portfolio of papers. The first grades in the portfolio were Mohawk Options 100% PCW and Mohawk Color Copy 100% Recycled. Both grades are process chlorine-free, 100% recycled paper manufactured with non-polluting, wind-generated energy. These grades are also certified by Green Seal and by SmartWood for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. Mohawk Paper Mills, Inc. is the largest manufacturer of premium printing and imaging papers in the country. Flagship grades include Strathmore®, Superfine™, Beckett®, BriteHue®, Via®, Mohawk Color Copy® and patented Inxwell® products, Navajo® and Options®. Mohawk engineers its papers to provide optimal performance for sheetfed, web and digital printing. Mohawk papers are used in a wide variety of communications including prestigious annual reports, corporate identity systems, high-end brochures, packaging and everyday communication for businesses of all sizes and types. A leader in environmental stewardship, Mohawk is the first large-scale production facility in the U.S. to use non-polluting, wind energy to manufacture paper. Several of Mohawk's recycled products have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council [FSC] and Green Seal. For more information, please call 1-800 THE MILL. Client Contact: |
