History
George O’Connor founded Mohawk in 1931 near Albany, New York. In 1972, his children, Thomas D. O'Connor, Frances Hardart and Annabelle Strife began modernizing and expanding the operation. During the 1990s the company launched Mohawk’s patented Inxwell papers; the first coated paper made with postconsumer fiber; and a new breed of papers for the growing digital print market. In 2005, Mohawk acquired the Strathmore and Beckett brands including a mill in Hamilton, OH. In 2009, Mohawk acquired the uncoated brands of SMART Papers and became the exclusive marketer of Kromekote and Knightkote to paper merchants worldwide. Today, a third generation O'Connor family runs a company that manufactures a full range of premium papers on six paper machines and employs approximately 650 people at three paper mills, two converting centers, four distribution facilities, and sales offices around the world.

Our Commitment to the Environment
As a privately owned company, Mohawk sets its own high standards for sustainability, with an emphasis on environmental stewardship. Mohawk’s Environmental Management System is structured around principles promoted by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economics (CERES). We manage our paper production in ways that protect the biosphere; use natural resources in a responsible and sustainable way; reduce waste and recycle; reduce risk to the business, employees and environment; and conserve energy.
Mohawk Fine Papers is featured in Metafore’s Environmental Paper Assessment Tool (EPAT), a web-based evaluation tool that provides buyers and sellers of paper products a consistent language and framework to evaluate and select environmentally preferable paper.
The EPAT uses 20 performance indicators in its evaluation, and does not determine which papers are “good” or “bad,” but rather gives businesses a comprehensive analysis so that they may choose paper products that coincide with their own environmental goals. For more information, visit www.metafore.org
As a partner in the EPA Climate Leaders program, Mohawk is developing corporate-wide greenhouse gas reduction goals and completes regular emissions inventories to help measure progress.
In addition, senior staff members share their knowledge about sustainable business practices through presentations for customers, end users, and other interested organizations.
